Agra is best known for the Taj Mahal, but the city has much more than one monument. Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh and nearby Fatehpur Sikri add history and context to a visit. Agra is also one of the three main stops on India’s Golden Triangle route with Delhi and Jaipur.
For many first-time visitors, one full day is enough for the main sights. Two days feels easier if you want a slower pace or a trip to Fatehpur Sikri.
Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is a 17th-century Mughal mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage Site and describes it as a major work of Mughal architecture.
Go early if you want softer light and cooler weather. Security rules can change, so check the official visitor information before you go. Do not plan your visit around ticket prices copied from old blogs because fees change.

Agra Fort
Agra Fort is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a large red sandstone fort that was used by Mughal rulers. Inside are palaces, courtyards, halls and views toward the Taj Mahal.
If you only have one day in Agra, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are the two places to keep. They are close enough to combine without crossing the whole city.

Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is a historic Mughal city outside central Agra. Emperor Akbar made it an imperial capital in the 16th century. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage Site.
This visit needs extra travel time, so it works better if you have two days. Do not squeeze it into a very short day if you also want to enjoy the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.
Mehtab Bagh
Mehtab Bagh is a garden across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal. It can give a quieter view of the monument from the opposite side of the river. It is useful near sunset, but opening times and access rules should be checked before you go.
A simple one-day Agra plan
Early morning: Taj Mahal.
Late morning: breakfast or a short rest.
Midday or afternoon: Agra Fort.
Late afternoon: Mehtab Bagh or a relaxed walk near your hotel.
Do not make the day harder by adding too many small stops. The two UNESCO monuments already need time.
Simple Agra travel tips
- Check Friday access: the Taj Mahal is normally closed to general visitors on Fridays, apart from mosque access for prayer.
- Use official ticket sources: avoid agents who promise special access without proof.
- Carry little: strict security makes a small bag easier.
- Plan for heat: warmer months can be tiring in open monuments.
- Leave time between cities: road and train delays can happen.
