The question “How much does a yoga instructor make?” sounds simple, but yoga work is rarely paid through one standard salary. Teachers may be employees, freelancers, private instructors, contractors or small business owners. The useful way to estimate income is to separate those models.
Start with gross teaching income
Write down the number of paid classes you can realistically teach each week and multiply it by the actual class fee in your market. Do not begin with an internet “average.” Use current job advertisements, studio offers or your own client rate.
If you teach privately, count only sessions that are normally paid. If your cancellation policy allows late cancellations without payment, your booked calendar will be larger than your paid calendar.
Then subtract the unpaid work
A one-hour class may require travel, setup, lesson planning, student messages, invoicing and follow-up. A freelancer who earns a high session fee but spends another hour travelling may have a much lower effective hourly rate.
Also subtract direct costs such as room rental, platform fees, advertising, insurance, transport, payment processing and taxes where applicable.
Employment salary and freelance revenue are not the same thing
A salaried instructor may receive predictable monthly pay and sometimes employment benefits. A freelancer can set rates but carries more risk. Retreat revenue is business revenue until venue, food, travel, accommodation and marketing costs are removed.
Use official salary data carefully
In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics groups yoga teachers inside the broader fitness trainers and instructors occupation. That category had a median annual wage of $47,160 in May 2025. It is a useful benchmark for the broader occupation, but it is not a yoga-only national salary.

A simple income calculation
Suppose a teacher is paid for twelve group classes and four private sessions in a week. Add the actual fees for those sixteen paid sessions. Then subtract weekly travel, room rental and platform costs. Finally, divide the remaining amount by the total hours spent teaching, travelling, preparing and administering the work. That effective hourly figure tells you much more than the advertised class rate.
What can raise earning capacity?
Better teaching, student retention, professional communication and a reliable schedule usually matter. A relevant specialization may open a new market, but only when it reflects real competence. A certificate by itself does not guarantee higher income.
Private teaching can increase revenue per session. Online teaching can reduce travel. Workshops can create higher-value events. None of these is automatically profitable; each has costs and requires an audience.
Do not build a career plan around exceptional earners
Some yoga businesses make substantial revenue. That does not mean a new instructor should expect the same. Influencer income, teacher-training ownership, retreat businesses and studio ownership are different commercial models from being paid to teach a class.

Once you track those numbers for several months, you can decide whether to add classes, raise rates, reduce travel or develop another teaching format.
